The Intense Pulsed Light treatment (IPL), also known as the “Photofacial” is a specialized tool that emits high-intensity pulses of various wavelengths of light. Light Therapy is different than Laser, it is more gentle. The light is converted to heat energy, which targets specific concerns, which will cause damaged cells to slough off in a few days. Collagen production is simultaneously stimulated, and the skin is rejuvenated as the damaged cells are replaced with healthy new cells.
The treatment is typically 30 minutes long, and no numbing is required for patient comfort. The patient is given protect eyewear and then the nurse begins treating the skin. The light is very bright and the sensation is compared to the sting of an elastic band snap. The skin may be slightly red or swollen immediately after treatment, and then 5-10 days after treatment the treated areas may peel slightly, but otherwise there is no downtime post-procedure. Optimal results are obtained with a series of 4-6 treatments, 1 month apart; regular annual maintenance is recommended in the fall.
